DIY Rustic Wood Letters and My Valentine

DIY Rustic Wood Letters and My Valentine

Usually, when I share about a DIY project on here, it is something that Hubby and I do together.  But this one, I mentioned I wanted to try and figure it out how to make some rustic wood letters – and he just went and did it.

Actually, he made two sets.  One to try and work out the angles and then one with the salvaged wood we still have from my Grandfather’s cottage.  I am quite sure my Dad never expected me to come up with so many projects from the old house.

Beach Decor

Beach Decor – Reclaimed Wood Whale Art

I realize it is very late in the season for a summer mantel.

But this is really not about a mantel.

It is about several stories coming together and resulting in a reclaimed wood whale.

And this whale is special.  She even has a name.

Glenda the Happy Whale.

And while she is very happy living on my mantel for now, this is her temporary home.  She is really destined to live on Long Beach Island, NJ.

Last year during Hurricane Sandy, my parents small beach placed took on so much damage that it had to be gutted.  And while they did get some insurance coverage, the rebuild has far exceeded what they received.  So, I am trying to help out by creating budget friendly items – and Glenda is the first one.

And, because as always, I am a sentimental girl, I used the wood from my Grandfather’s house to build her.

Two destroyed homes coming together to make a happy whale.  I know a stretch.  But like I said, I am a sentimental girl.

Vintage Doorknob Pumpkins

Vintage Doorknob Pumpkins

Grab your coupons and your sales flyer and head to the nearest craft store.

And buy the cheapest and ugliest fake pumpkin you can find.

I am going to show you how easy it is to make the ugliest pumpkins into a vintage doorknob pumpkins.

The problem with fake pumpkins – even if you paint them, the stems are usually pretty awful.  So instead of trying to make it look real, why not give it a vintage looks with some old doorknobs.

This is where I started

Four differently shaped and style pumpkins, an exacto knife, chalk and craft paint and a pile of doorknobs and hardware.

And if you are wondering what Junkers United is – it is a group of bloggers sharing what they made with something others might consider “junk”.  Today I am sharing a simple and fun project – that conquers one more thing in my garage hoard collections - repurposed milk crate stool.

I found this table in our kitchen, with the stool, at an estate sale a few years ago.  I had been considering buying it, with two stools from Pottery Barn, but the price kept me from pulling the trigger.  I was ecstatic when I found it and brought it home.

Decorating Ideas

Decorating Ideas: Vintage Door Plate Wall

After all the Christmas decorations came down, I have left most of the home un-decorated and simple.

But, slowly, I have been pulling together a corner at a time – and this week, I worked on a corner in our dining room by creating a vintage door plate wall.

I used French cleats to hang the door and an assortment of methods for hanging the plates.  But honestly, the hardest part was picking the plates.  I originally thought I was going to do a more formal display with transferware.  As I started to pull it together, I found myself gravitating towards the more quirky options.

Hence, the odd little fish glue to the white plate…

It reminds me of a good friend, and makes me giggle – and isn’t that what we should do in our homes?
