Decorating Ideas: Feeling the Need to Be a Little More Bold…

We have lived in our home for 12 1/2 years.

It has been almost 3 years since we started our renovation.

Finding Home Entry

When we planned our renovation, I had not yet discovered blog.

Pinterest did not exist.

And I am glad for that because I know the decisions we made were true to our style.

Finding Home Dining Room

But after 2 1/2 years of blogging and following along with Pinterest from pretty early on has definitely had an effect.

But I realized, with the exception of a whole lot of mantel changes, I have pretty much stuck with where I put things three years ago.

I have been being very safe.

The art is in the same places.

The furniture is the same places.

I think I am ready for some changes.

Especially on my walls.

I still love my wall colors, but I have a whole host of interesting things in storage that are now going ON the walls.

And I am feeling the need to be a little more bold.

Okay, maybe not that bold.

But more collected and more a reflection of us.  Of the things we love.

Kind of like what I did here.

There is something about this look that has a lot of appeal…

Lavender Room

And this picture has long appealed to me…

And maybe I will finally have the courage to put something up on the high wall in my family room or hallway.

Heck, maybe I will even move a piece of furniture.

Wouldn’t that be crazy!

I just know it is time to mix things up a little bit.

How about you?  Are you ready to make changes?  Maybe be a little more bold?

Wishing you a great weekend!

P.S. Maybe I could start with something like this..

  1. Hi Laura, We moved into our house 3 years ago and everything is pretty much as I put it in place 3 years ago! So I’m excited to see the changes you’ll be making – I need some inspiration! I love that painting.

  2. Isn’t it funny how we love the bold look so much in pictures but are afraid to implement it? When I started getting rid of all the typical and safe brown furniture some years ago, it’s amazing how much more I loved my house. I look back at my decor from then and think “why did I consider what I had so safe?” It really wasn’t all that attractive compared to the new bolder looks with color and personality. I think it’s just learning that it’s okay to have our houses not be just like every other house’s decor. I would love to see what you do based on the inspiration photos you have. Your house is gorgeous as it is, but making changes sure would be fun.

  3. I know you get the urge to move things around and shake things up sometimes, I do too. One of the reasons I love your home so much though, is because it does look collected and like a true reflection of a family. Just saying. 🙂 And now that I said that…I’m with you…there are so many cool and bold looking ideas out there now. I’m trying to figure out how to work in at least one piece of abstract art.

  4. Laura,
I see your house and can tell a lot of thought went into the design. I also guess with chance luck, some things fell into place and some things evolved.
I am a great believer in home being a calm place and comfortable. With all the design magazines, catalogs and even blogs I have to decide if I am reacting to a real need for change or just jumping on the next “big thing”.
Is it really a need to change something to improve”form or function” or is it me following so I don’t feel left out. I think we all have to make peace with what we surround ourselves with.
I feel the best thing to decorate with is people. I want to do more of that.

  5. Ok Laura, even though I just had surgery on ny dominant hand & have to peck this out with the thumb of the other hand I feel I MUST speak on behalf of the black Tole trays in your dinig room!! Don ‘t take them down. We love them. Add to them, boldly, instead! (This took 4ever 2 right!). 🙂

  6. Whatever you decide to do, I’m sure it will be lovely and welcoming. Your taste is impeccable and your home filled with warmth and style. It’s not always easy to achieve both but you seem to do so with ease. Looking forward to your changes!

  7. I’m always wanting to make changes and I think it drives my family nuts sometimes. LOL. I have certain areas that anchor the rooms and remain unchanged (for the most part) and then other areas that are constantly evolving as seasons change or I bring something new home to add to the mix. Your home is beautiful so anything you do will just accentuate that. The beauty won’t go anywhere!

  8. When I’m on Pinterest (which is all the time) I constantly go back and forth over what style I’m coveting at the moment. At different times during the same day I may be looking at industrial and then later looking at french cottage and then later looking at mid century modern. I think I need an imaginary home that I can decorate in different styles to get it out of my system, so I’ll leave my own house alone. My husband would be on board with the leaving my house alone part, not sure he’s go for buying another house though.

  9. Your home is beautiful but I completely understand the need for change. We have lived in our current home for seven years and I’m starting to get the itch to change things around. With all the blogs, pinterest and magazines I can see how one would could stray from their own style. I love my kitchen and its oak cabinets but after seeing pin after pin of white kitchens I was beginning to think I should paint ours. Luckily my husband said no way and we still have our oak cabinets but we updated the kitchen with all new appliances and my next change is going to be a new faucet. Some change is good but sticking with what you like is even better.

  10. Your home is lovely and I’m sure the changes you have in mind will work well. The art wall above your guest bed really reminds me of the inspiration bedroom picture and some of your current pillows and rugs have similar colours to the lavender room inspiration picture. Maybe you have already been on that journey for a while now. So glad the weekend is here. I’m celebrating Friday night with a cup of hot chocolate and some of my favourite blogs.

  11. I will be watching! Oh, and try being in the same house for 25 years – talk about stuck in a rut. But finally the old carpet is gone and hardwoods will be installed soon – yay!

  12. I think change is good. We’ve been in our home for going on 12 years and I’m always changing. There are some rooms the have been the same but only because I’m not sure where I want to go in those spaces and I’m working on that. I think whatever you do will look be wonderful and will be a reflection of your style. Which is so very lovely I might add.

  13. I can’t imagine your home looking any more beautiful than it already does, but I totally get the urge to wanna switch things up. I do it all the time. I have a few rooms that stay untouched, and then my family room gets tweaked every other day. I guess because I’m in there all the time and I see things that bother me. LOL!

  14. Loved the design board you did with the traditional family room. I would absolutely love to see more in the future. I really love looking at decorating. Wish you would show one at least once a month. I already checked out the stores in my area that offer these items other than Ballard designs. Love traditional but maybe you could show some cottage, coastal, or shabby chic design boards in the future.
