The Business Diaries - The Empty Shelves Edition
Hello sweet friends. I know. It has been quiet around here.
I guess I really had no idea how much work writing a book would really be. I knew there would be a lot of work, as much as you can know before you get into it. But, I don't think I realized how much it would take up my all the room in my brain.
Really, there is no more room. I had to just accept that I wasn't going to get life done, attend sporting events (which is now out the window), write the book AND write blog posts. Something had to give.
The truth is I feel a little bit like these shelves from a garden center I visited this morning. Empty.
I went to buy some plants so that I could photograph the last project for the book (yeah!). It is only a mini celebration though, there is still lots and lots of writing to do. Oh, and the book is due Thursday! I told my family to pretend I am out of town. Maybe I should just check into a hotel and not come out until this is done.
Kidding.
Sort of.
Back to the garden center...
Their shelves are empty. Right now.
What we don't see is in the background, they are nurturing their beautiful plants in their greenhouses, they are placing orders for amazing plants and they are setting everything up to be ready.
But very soon, they will be full with all of the plants and flowers growing in the greenhouses. They will be getting deliveries of plants and trees and all types of beautiful things.
In the blogging world, there is a self-induced pressure to post, post and post some more. In the season of these last few months, I have had to accept that less posting is necessary. But just like the garden center, there is a lot happening in the background.
Right now, my shelves are empty too. But, come this fall (God willing) I will have a book with my name on it.
And coming next month, I will be relaunching the shop with a really beautiful and a special group of products.
And coming soon, we will hopefully really be launching our wholesale program.
And I have so much to share with you on the maple side of the business.
And if you haven't noticed yet, our little site here got a little makeover. This one was forced with a deadline. I have always thought I was a friendly girl, but I guess I wasn't mobile friendly. The "All Powerful Google" said I had to be mobile friendly by April 21st, so I had to redesign.
The great part is I wanted to do it anyway. Now, you can read Finding Home on your phone or tablet much easier and the home page is much more user friendly. Also, when the new shop launches next month, it will all be integrated together.
I share all this today not to say "sorry I am so lame." Okay, actually I am saying "sorry I am so lame."
However, I am mostly saying that sometimes it is okay for the shelves to be empty. To accept that it is okay to put your energy in the greenhouses and building up for the future. Do I wish I could have my shelves full and the greenhouse rocking? Yes, I wish I could manage both. And someday I hope that I can.
In the meantime, I am giving myself some grace.
And I hope you will do the same for yourself.
