Defining-Your-Decorating-Style-2

I just chopped all my hair in to what essentially could be called a pixie cut. Actually, first I had my hair cut “short”, and then my girlfriend came back yesterday and I went “really short”.

I kind of love it – it is fun and funky – but still take some getting used to.

And by summer, I will grow it out again.

So, why am I sharing this when the title of this post is really about finding your design style?

Because, just like my hair, I am always changing around my home and tweaking and redecorating – but when it really gets down to it – there are some things about my style that will always stay true.

I was so pleased when Jenna from Rain On a Tin Roof and Jamie from So Much Better with Age asked me to be part of their “What’s your style series”. And if you are joining for the first time from The White Buffalo Styling Company – welcome!

So, although it can be a challenging thing to do, I am going to share how I define my style…

I am a traditional girl at heart – and my home's style and its furnishing are grounded in traditional style.

But I still like to have a little fun. Just like my pixie cut – I am sometimes quirky with my style. The perfect example of that is with my plate wall – that I hung on a vintage door that is hung on the wall.

Or like a side table with really traditional lines – but painted gray.

I like a little bit of glam and a little bit of creamy white popping through.

And sentimental reminders – the picture of my girls’ feet melts me.

And I love lots of texture and subtle pattern.

And I swoon for anything crewel – even the pattern on my wallpaper.

I like a room that I can lean the colors in different directions – so right now, the living room is very blue focused – but at Christmas it was all about warm golds.

And I love just a little hint of a modern edge – with clean lines to contrast the traditional elements.

And every room, is not complete, without something vintage. Something, or many somethings, that tell a story and make a room completely unique.

That is really what I love the most.

And so, I have named my style

Revisited Traditional

Because it is traditional, with a twist and some quirks – and because I am constantly revisiting it and reworking it – just like my hair.

So, how about you? What is your style? Have you ever tried to define it?

I don’t think there are hard and fast rules – but sometimes putting words to it will help you in the direction of your home style – if you know what style you love – it can help guide your decisions when making room selections.

My suggestion is just start making a list of words that you think fit – and then start narrowing it down – if you end up coming up with Vintage Modern Contemporary Mid-Century with a little bit of Urban Cowboy – that is okay – because it will be uniquely you and that is what is most important!

And if your style is Vintage Modern Contemporary Mid-Century with a little bit of Urban Cowboy , please send me pictures because I think that would be fabulous!
