I just chopped all my hair in to what essentially could be called a pixie cut. Actually, first I had my hair cut “short”, and then my girlfriend came back yesterday and I went “really short”.
I kind of love it – it is fun and funky – but still take some getting used to.
And by summer, I will grow it out again.
So, why am I sharing this when the title of this post is really about finding your design style?
Because, just like my hair, I am always changing around my home and tweaking and redecorating – but when it really gets down to it – there are some things about my style that will always stay true.
I was so pleased when Jenna from Rain On a Tin Roof and Jamie from So Much Better with Age asked me to be part of their “What’s your style series”. And if you are joining for the first time from The White Buffalo Styling Company – welcome!
So, although it can be a challenging thing to do, I am going to share how I define my style…
I am a traditional girl at heart – and my home’s style and its furnishing are grounded in traditional style.

But I still like to have a little fun. Just like my pixie cut – I am sometimes quirky with my style. The perfect example of that is with my plate wall – that I hung on a vintage door that is hung on the wall.
Or like a side table with really traditional lines – but painted gray.

I like a little bit of glam and a little bit of creamy white popping through.
And sentimental reminders – the picture of my girls’ feet melts me.

And I love lots of texture and subtle pattern.
And I swoon for anything crewel – even the pattern on my wallpaper.

I like a room that I can lean the colors in different directions – so right now, the living room is very blue focused – but at Christmas it was all about warm golds.
And I love just a little hint of a modern edge – with clean lines to contrast the traditional elements.
And every room, is not complete, without something vintage. Something, or many somethings, that tell a story and make a room completely unique.
That is really what I love the most.

And so, I have named my style
Revisited Traditional
Because it is traditional, with a twist and some quirks – and because I am constantly revisiting it and reworking it – just like my hair.

So, how about you? What is your style? Have you ever tried to define it?
I don’t think there are hard and fast rules – but sometimes putting words to it will help you in the direction of your home style – if you know what style you love – it can help guide your decisions when making room selections.
My suggestion is just start making a list of words that you think fit – and then start narrowing it down – if you end up coming up with Vintage Modern Contemporary Mid-Century with a little bit of Urban Cowboy – that is okay – because it will be uniquely you and that is what is most important!
And if your style is Vintage Modern Contemporary Mid-Century with a little bit of Urban Cowboy , please send me pictures because I think that would be fabulous!
And, if you need more help to be inspired – you are in the right place at the right time. All of these bloggers are sharing their styles and how they came to define them – stop by to be inspired!

You are so right with defining style. I finally figured that the reason I had stopped working/decorating our down graded size house was because I was trying to copy someone else. It wasn’t me! I just wasn’t satisfied with the results. The curtains I created were beautifully sewn but the fabric and style wasn’t me. Having just discovered blogdom I am able to pinpoint what is right and what is wrong for me. Thank you Laura for a very inspiring post.
Revisited Traditional – I love it!! Your home is so beautiful. And crewel – me too!! But, I don’t have any of it in my home. Not yet anyway!
Love your space and all of your quirky accessories add so much personality!

Your home is just beautiful Laura!!! I love your unique spin on a traditional style!!! 🙂
I love your home. Yes, revisited traditional is very fitting. I love all of the antique finds you have throughout too. (I totally need to dig through my CD’s and find the photo of all three of my kids feet. My oldest was babysitting and had my middle sit in her lap and then plopped the baby in middle child’s lap.. just a different angle of their feet. I scrapbooked the photo many years ago, but I think it needs to go in the collage frame on the wall too).
Laura your home is beautiful and I love your Revisited Traditional style. All of your quirky accessories are my favorite.
I’m often asked what is my style and I never know how to respond. Now that you have explained yours I’ll have to put some thought into what I like and how I have furnished our house. Looking forward to this series.
Will you be posting pictures of your pixie cut? I bet it looks great.
Laura, I too am a traditional girl…with a twist. 🙂 I LOVE your style! And, that wallpaper is swoon worthy for sure! Life to the full! Melissa @ DaisyMaeBelle
Could not have described my style any better than you did in Revisited Traditional. I have always been traditional with a little country and contemporary throw in. However, because of creative women like you who decorate and share in a blog, I am adding (and sometimes creating) more interesting and unique ideas. Please keep it up. Your blog, in the words of my 6yr old friend Anna, is my “fav”.
I want to see your hair!! I’ve had mine in a longer pixie for over one year and I love it!
First of all, I love the hair analogy. Your home is peaceful and I also love how every corner of your home is a place for something that represents you or your loved ones….thank you for allowing us into your beautiful home…xo
wonderful home xx
I think that my style could be defined by Revisited Traditional as well. I love including unique pieces into a more traditional home. And the picture of your children’s feet that makes you smile is the perfect touch.
I love all of the little touches you have in your living room. Each accessory is unique, and I love the photo of the feet! Thank you for sharing! Kari
This looks like a wonderful series…I so love your “Revisited Traditional” style!
Love it!! I like that it’s a little country, a little rock-n-roll! 😉 (channeling Donnie and Marie today)
I think my style might be ‘Vintage Modern Contemporary Mid-Century with a little bit of Urban Cowboy’ as you call it. I think this means that I love vintage from the mid century (1930’s-1950’s for me, although I’d say 1947 is my favorite) and the urban cowboy to me just means that I’m a country girl at heart. I always have been and always will be. I’d love to send you some pictures of what I mean by this, but sadly (and happily) we are moving to a new house and it will take me awhile to get to where I would want to take pictures of it. Maybe one day I’ll put it on my blog. Right now I’m pretty silent on the blog, but after June I hope to remedy that. I appreciate your post and your sense of humor. Keep up the good work!
I LOVE that you stay true to your traditional style while still making it feel updated and modern 🙂
Oh I LOVE the name “revisited traditional” and totally feel that I lean more that way too in my own home Laura! Well maybe it’s more like “revisited traditional with a french country twist”. Or “revisited traditional with a french country twist and a touch of Playmobil and Legos” 😉 I have always gravitated towards traditional lines and those lines seem to provide the perfect foundation to add some fun and trendy touches here and there. Such a great series you ladies are doing!
Vanessa
