The house I grew up in was a split-level home with the kitchen on the second floor. There was a door in the kitchen and the dining room to the back of the house, which would be great under normal circumstances. However, in our home, there was no deck so it was a “door of doom”. Really, the door was on the second floor with nothing on the other side of it.
When I was in high school, we added on a big beautiful deck and we were finally able to enjoy the space outside of our kitchen. Maybe that explains why I have never know what to do with the space right outside of our kitchen. For the last few years, the grill has been there and from time to time an awkward chair that no one sat in.
When I was recently contacted by Trex to partner on a project, for the first time I had a useful vision for this space. I decided to create a beautiful sitting area, right outside our kitchen door. It is the perfect spot to have a morning cup of coffee. With the addition of several DIY solar lanterns on the side table and overhead, along with some pretty white string lights, it also makes the perfect spot to rest with a beverage at the end of the day.
I was surprised to learn that the decking company Trex is so much more than that. They make a whole series of Trex outdoor lighting as well as a line of Trex outdoor furniture. I selected the Cape Cod 2-Piece Folding Adironak Seating Set as well as the Cape Cod Round 18″ Side Table. I chose them first because they are foldable, which is perfect for winter storage and because I loved the style. The color is really beautiful and I know it will last because it is all weather outdoor furniture. I love that the ottoman easily separates or tucks right up to the chair.
I added two small area rugs (from Target) grouped together and some galvanized planters. I added a white lantern (from Target) to add a little bit of candle light to the space.
I added some more plants on the side table and some solar mason jars.
When it all came together, it is the perfect use for this awkward space. I can tuck away to read a book or even watch the kids in the pool while tucking away from the sun. I couldn’t be happier with the space.
And the best part is, there is no “door of doom”.

Thanks so much for reading!
This space is gorgeous. I am amazed that you hadn’t placed furniture there before! It’s a perfect spot for reading or enjoying the early morning. I’m sure you will really enjoy it now and wonder how you ever did without it. 🙂
Now I really need to know where I can get those adorable plant stakes of the truck and trailer in your pots!
Gosh, I am wondering the same thing about the plant stakes. Source PLEEEEEASE?
How sweet is your little space. So comfortable to just sit and read or take a snooze ~
I love it…
Have a wonderful day in your new space.

Beautiful Laura…I have an “off brand” type of Trex and love the low maintenance…on next project will definitely be with the Trex brand…a great product!
This is a beautiful spot!! I love all the tin gardening pots and the rug that brings in some color and pattern. I would just find myself sitting it out there all day!! Enjoy!
It looks perfect. Coffee in the morning, or the evening! I did not know Trex had lighting. Love the idea of solar as there are no convenient plug ins on a 100 year old farm.
super amazing space…Pinned that’s right up my alley!!!!! xxoox Christine from Little Brags
Looks fabulous! I’m still slowly working on my outdoor areas, and can use all the ideas i can get. Thanks!
What a sweet spot for relaxing. I really like the chair and table and the paper lanterns are perfect. It looks so much better and I’m sure you will enjoy this cozy spot.
Beautiful seating area! I love your use of colours. They really come together and the flower cushion really stands out. Really well done. Thank you very much for sharing.

Laura, What a great outdoor space! We are thinking of covering our patio with Trex. The painted concrete is impossible to keep clean.
