Tips for Helping Your Kids Keep Their Rooms Organized

Tips for Helping Your Kids Keep Their Rooms Organized

Today I wanted to share with you some thoughts about helping your kids keep their rooms organized.

This is my 13 year old daughter’s bedroom.  We redid it about two years ago, and it still looks like this now.

Now, I am not going to mislead you, it doesn’t really look like this.  Right now her bed is not made and she has stuff on top of the lockers and I am pretty sure there is laundry on the floor.

I am not talking about clean – you know the stuff, that if they took fifteen minutes, it would be all addressed.  I am talking about keeping it organized so it is possible for them to catch up with the cleaning in around 15 minutes.

I shared with you last week how we recently did a major purge in my 11 year old’s room.  This was a purge of epic proportions and it was hard.

Not to make excuses, but this wasn’t all her fault.  When we redid the office last year, a lot of the extra furniture got put in her room.  Space was tight.  She had some bad habits – and it got bad.  To the point where she asked for help.

We didn't set her up for success.

Changing My Relationship with Cleaning

Changing My Relationship with Cleaning

That title sounds very dramatic, doesn't it?  But, I have a love / hate relationship with cleaning.

Actually, truth is, I really just don’t like it.

I know some people find it relaxing and do it with great ease.  I am not one of those people.

But, I have come to realize that keeping my home clean and organized goes hand in hand with decorating my home.

What is the purpose of creating a beautiful home if it is a mess and disorganized?

Changing My Relationship with Cleaning

What is the purpose of a treasured piece of furniture of it isn’t well cared for and maintained?

Now, I am not talking about perfection or stressing ourselves out further.  Just as I spoke of the other day, I think there are ways to organize our homes without getting overwhelmed.

I also think cleaning our homes shouldn’t be overwhelming either.

8 Tips for Organizing Craft Supplies

So, for a while now we have been getting turning our loft space into our home office / craft room / homework space / hangout area.  Now, this is not a huge room, so this has been a lofty goal from the beginning.  I wanted to find every way possible to maximize space.

I also wanted to make sure that for once, I had a space for organizing craft supplies.

My starting point was this cabinet found at a local vintage shop.

8 Tips for Organizing Craft Supplies

This cabinet gave me a run for my money.  It must have had a former life in a kitchen where there was a lot of fried foods prepared.  I spent hours peeling off layers of gunk.  In the end, it completely rejected primer and I knew I had to turn to chalk paint.

I used Annie Sloan bright white on the outside.  In hindsight, I should have considered a darker color because there was some bleed through still – but I really wanted this cabinet to be white so I am good with it.
