Maple and White Balsamic Dressing

Hello friends!  If you happen to be at the Country Living Fair in Ohio today, I am on the kitchen stage at 12:00 sharing this recipe along with a few other maple syrup ideas.  Stop by and say hello.  If you were there, here is the recipe.  If not, enjoy it anyway!

On another note, a few months back we announced that we were writing a cookbook.  We still are, but it has been pushed back until next year.  We overcommitted ourselves and had to make the decision that it was an area where we had to pull back.  The wheels are still turning and I can’t wait to get back to it!  Thanks for your patience!

Thank you so much for stopping by!

Welcome!  I am so excited you are here for our fourth annual Finding Fall Home Tour.  This year, we have mixed it up a bit and we are not going to make you wait all week to see all the homes.  Today, all 12 amazing bloggers will be sharing their homes all decked out for fall.  Each of the links are below, but first, I wanted to share our home

Welcome to our front foyer!

fall-front-foyer

I have looking for exactly this dresser for the front hall for about a year and I finally found it this summer in New Hampshire and I love it!  I am no longer loving the wall color and the mirror though, but like they say, it is all a work in process.

I added some pumpkins and flowers (weeds!) from our yard and a pretty printable that I will be sharing more details (and colors) on Wednesday.  It is just the fall spruce up that area needed and I love when I walk by it.

fall-printable

If the truth is told, a lot of our house is being taken over by products for the business.  You won’t be seeing a pretty dining room this year as it is becoming our shipping and receiving room.  Soon enough we will be able to look back on this time and laugh, but right now, not so much.   For my sanity, it is important for me to keep the foyer, family and kitchen area pulled together and work free.  This little fall spruce is just what I needed.

fall-family-room-findinghomefarms

I have had a tendency in the past to trash the house while decorating for the seasons.  This time, I turned on some music, stayed really focused and organized and cleaned as I went.  I even put everything that I took out or didn’t use away before I let myself take one picture.  I am so much happier that the process wasn’t chaos.  Actually, it started from when I went through our fall stuff.  I went into the garage attic, despite the ludicrous heat, and sorted through and only took out what I thought I was going to use and brought it into the house in bags.  It simplifies setting up (and taking down!) for the holidays.  With our schedule so busy, I didn’t want decorating for the seasons to become stressful.  Fall season without stress – check!  Let’s see how Christmas goes!

fall-family-room-decorating

I have gone back and forth on fall color schemes but I always find my way back to the traditional warm colors of fall.  Despite my best attempts, I really am a traditional girl.   In the family room I changed out our pillows which makes a huge difference and took out the greenery of summer and replaced it with some colorful foliage and of course some pumpkins.

fall-family-room

I almost always start with our mantel.  I had a completely different plan before I got started, but then decided it was too Halloween focused and I wasn’t ready to go there yet.  I gave myself a challenge and set a timer for 30 minutes with the intent of being done in that timeframe.  I left the chalkboard up there from the summer and I am finding that I really do just leaving it there and then I got started.

mantel-decorating-for-fall

I am loving the border on the chalkboard.  I simply drew the circles with a candle cap and then used a ruler to draw the edges.  I didn’t want it perfect and it came out as I had hoped.  I added the wreath I have had for several years with a thumbtack on the frame and then built around it.

galvanized-fall-mantel

I knew I wanted to temper the darker colors of fall with my favorite color – galvanized and I love how they work together.

pumpkin-fall-mantel

There is not a fire in there yet – but I look forward to quiet nights in our family room.

Keeping things simple from there, I just added a few touches through the rest of the space.

Hello friends.  Today is Saturday and that is when I like to share some of the favorite things I have found around the web from time to time.  To start, I can tell you what I am not finding this year.  Hydrangeas.  I cut them back every year because otherwise they would just get to large for the spaces that they are in, but there is not rhyme or reason to when I get blossoms or do not.  This year we have a  few blooms here and there so I will just have to hold on to the memories.

I was totally skeptical that new windows could make this big of a difference.  Check out the before at Thistlewood Farms.

1 – Summer is done, but we are still hanging on.

School has started, but around here the leaves are still green.  Okay, there are a few red leaves peaking in here and there, but I am not paying attention yet.  We have had a busy summer between work commitments, kids’ schedules and as much fun and relaxation as we could fit in.  I can’t deny that once we reach this point in the summer, I am usually ready to start getting back into a little bit more of a structured day.  And with that, hopefully hanging around here more often!

2 – Where are we with the new building?

Let’s describe it as two steps forward and one step back.  We have run into a lot of glitches which I will share more about in the future.  In the meantime, we are still moving forward and are really, really, really hoping to start building this fall.  We will keep you updated!

3 – Fall Home Tour

Even though I am holding out on fall outside, I am starting to bring it inside.  I am so excited that next week will be our fourth annual Finding Fall Home Tours.  We are mixing it up a bit and doing it all on one day.  So make sure to stop by on Monday the 12th to see all of the beautiful homes that will be opened up to share with you.  If you would like to see last year’s tour, you can click here.

4 – Trade Shows!

We attended two different wholesale trade show this summer.  First, in June, we attended the Fancy Food Show.  Then, in August we attended the NY Now show.   We set out in January that our goal would be to attend these two shows.  I was intimidated and knew it would be a lot of work, but could not have fully understood how much work it really was.  I am happy to say, however, that both shows were totally worth it.  I will share more details on our set-up and booth in the coming weeks.

5 – Meal Planning Experts Please Chime In

So we ended the long weekend with our first ever attempt at meal planning for the week.  We sat down and planned out both lunches and dinners and a few thoughts on breakfast.  Then we all went to the grocery store to get what we needed for the week.  We feel like it will work well with our busy schedules now that sports on back on the calendars and that it will hopefully lead to less food being thrown away.  We are totally newbies at this though, so please chime in if you tips and suggestions!

6 – Country Living Fair!

I am so excited to share that I will be at the Country Living Fair next week in Ohio!  We will once again be in the tent with the amazing Jen from Earth Angels Studios.  I have a few surprises with that as well and I will share them later this week.  Are you going?  If so, please introduce yourself, I would love to meet you!

7 – New Scents in the shop!

I am so crazy in love with our new scents we are launching today in our soy candle line!  Nutmeg is delicious and is perfect for the fall but carries right through to the holidays.  Imagine drinking your eggnog with the Nutmeg candle burning!  What is more perfect than a pumpkin candle?  Well, a pumpkin candle that isn’t overly pumpkiny.  We paired it with sage that gives it just the perfect balance to fill through room without be overpowering.  We absolutely love it.

Click here to find all of our soy candles.

And that is all my friends!  I think that catches us up from the last few weeks.  Thanks, as always, for reading!

Of all the questions I get on the blog, one happens again and again.  And each time, I respond and let the reader know that I don’t have a good answer for them.  What’s the question?  What color paint did we use on our house, shutters and front door?

Farmhouse-Front-Porch_edited-1

I am sorry to disappoint you, but our home is actually vinyl siding.  And the shutters are vinyl (and falling off in some places!).

Simple-Front-Porch

I do have some good news for you though.  I can answer the color of our front door.  It is black.  Yup, just exterior paint in the very descriptive color of black.  And I do have one more piece of information that is helpful.  When we painted our sugar house and garage, we painted it to match.  That is also what we used on the floor of the porch.  Actually we used opaque stain instead of paint.  The color we used is Benjamin Moore HC 77 – Alexandria Beige.

Our shutters are a charcoal gray, but I am hoping to either paint them or replace them at some point with black shutters.

Hopefully that answers all of your questions, but if not, just let me know!

I am quite sure I have mentioned it many times before, but just in case you missed it, I love blogging.  Really and truly I do.  I LOVE this blog and the journey it has taken me over the last 6 years.  My original tag line was “the stories of the journey we are all on”.   Oh my, it has been a journey.

Lately, the journey has kept me away from my beloved blog.  If only the posts that I write in my head while driving from place to place would automatically post.  Actually, that is probably for the best because most of that should never be published.

White-Farmhouse-Kitchen-Decorating_edited-1

The reality is that a lot of the work we have been doing over the last three years on the product side of the business is really starting to come together.  We are seeing several things in the works, that if they come together, will be so great for our little company.  Everyday, I have plans to be here, but then one thing after another comes up and it take priority.

And then there is that thing called family.  And our girls.  Time is going so fast.  We went on college visits last week.

Gulp.

And then there is all that is going on in the world and it is hard to find the words and know what is appropriate.

I think you can understand where I am at.

Summer-Farmhouse-Kitchen_edited-1

I am here to say that I really am trying to figure out how to blog more but the truth is, I haven’t really figure it out yet.  This is my official claim of “I can’t do it all”.   There is so much on the horizon that I can’t wait to share with you.  I know I should really be more of a “share as you go along” person, but somehow that doesn’t work for me.  Maybe I don’t want to jinx things.  What I will say is that if everything comes together as we are working towards, we are going to have some really fabulous products to share with you very soon.  Seriously, I am so excited.

Decorating-Traditional-Farmhouse-Kitchen copy

Here are a few quick highlights that I am hoping to share more on:

  • We attended our first trade show as an exhibitor, the Fancy Food Show and it went really well and we learned so much.
  • We are attending NY NOW as an exhibitor and we are so excited and terrified about that.
  • We have a full team here.  We have Karen who helps out with pretty much everything two afternoons a week and Chelle who is a long time friend who is helping with product development, sales and emotional support to me!  I can’t wait to share more about both of them.
  • Oh, and somehow my Dad has become our best sale guy.  I didn’t see that one coming.
  • We are living in our back porch with its makeover.  Seriously, we love it out there.  I even worked one day out there and got so much done.
  • We have a photographer coming next week to shoot our house inside and out for Cottages & Bungalows magazine.  Much work to be done around here!

I would love to say you will see more of me, but I don’t want to make promises I can’t keep.   I will say I will try harder.  Don’t be surprised if you see it in bursts and then silence.  Bursts and then silence.  I am just keeping it real.  I will say I have kind of fallen in love with Snapchat.  You can find me at FindingHomeFarms.  It is quick and easy and it doesn’t have to be “perfect”.  I also tend to share more of the business side of things, soooo, come on over and join me there.

And of course, you will also find me, pretty much daily on Instagram.  Finding Home Farms there as well.

Thanks so much for reading and letting me share.  Wishing you a fantastic weekend friends.

Our screened porch has long been one of my favorite spaces in our home, and now it is just our style.  It is where the slower nights happen, where conversations flow and we just relax.  It is where we come in from the pool and wrap up in blankets as the nights start to get cooler.  When we originally decorated it, I had found this amazing vintage set that I fell in love with.  I scrubbed it with a wire brush and painted it bright red and filled the whole space with bright colors and vintage pieces.

After a few seasons, I made a discovery.  There is a reason they don’t make vintage furniture like they used to.  It is not very comfortable!  I shared with you a few weeks ago that I had a plan in mind for some changes – and now it is all done!

And I love it so!

Our-Summer-Screened-Porch

We still want to replace that table with something larger and with more leg room underneath, but other than that, our porch is fully operational for the summer and right into the fall.  It is filled with softer colors and has more of a farmhouse feel, with a little bit of a modern take.  It feels more like the rest of our house and is way more comfortable and peaceful.  And there is a spot for everyone to sit and enjoy.

And it all started with this set from Wayfair.com – The Catalina four piece seating set.

Simple-Porch-Decorating

I kept the same chicken coop coffee table that we made a few years ago and added this rug from Joss & Main that I purchased.  The beige throw pillows came with the set and the others I either had or picked up at Homegoods.  They are actually not outdoor pillows but it is completely covered in here.  We will see how that works out!  The other pillows from the set were added to our front porch.

Decorating-Screened-Porch

I kept the accessories simple, just bringing in some plants and such.  I made sure there was a place for the dogs.  It has cracked me up how they knew it was their spot from the first night and most nights since.  I found the dog bed at Homegoods.

Goldendoodle-on-the-porch

I feel all swoony when I see the beams with the wicker of the furniture and the wicker of our chandelier all together against the white walls.  It’s like the chandelier was waiting all these years to really really look good.

The knots of the pine have started to bleed through the paint on the walls, which I always knew they would, and I love it.

Simple-Wicker-Navy-Gray-Screened-Porch copy

There is quite the story around this lantern.  I will share it another day, but let’s just say, head wounds really do bleed.

Galvanized-Lantern-Refinished

I am learning to simplify decorating.  When the boxes arrived from Wayfair with this set (it was mind blowing that the whole thing came in four not huge boxes!), it only took a little bit of time to set up.  I must admit, I wasn’t even here and when I got back from running a few errands it was all set to go.  Other than cleaning the pollen that was on the floor and sills, it was just a matter of placing things.  I took out everything that wasn’t working any more and posted it on Facebook for my friends to come and pick up.  Everything got a new home to be loved once again.

And with that, I am off to enjoy this incredible space.  Let me know if you have any questions that I can answer!

Summer is officially here.  We have used our porch and our pool more already this year than I think all of last summer.  Dinners are casual and often eaten on the porch.   And did I mention easy?  We are all about keeping it simple – but delicious.

This is our new favorite.  And if you are like me and really like appetizers, this is even better.  Today, I am sharing our favorite new Friday night dinner.

Cheese-meat-maple-platter

Literally, this is a tray of cheese (goat, brie, parmesan, mozeralla and cheddar), meat (prosciutto, salami, grilled chicken), fruit (pears, apricots, peaches, plums, raspberries), peppadew peppers (because they rock my world), maple mustard and maple syrup.  That is how we did it.  The first time.  Now we have a list of everyone’s favorite choices for next week.

Place everything on a large tray or a mixture of small trays, bring out some small plates and enjoy.  I also made a Prosecco sangria to go along with this.

You may notice that our porch is looking a bit different.  For more peeks of our porch, how I made the sangria and more details on our meet and cheese tray in the video below.

Thanks so much for reading and watching!  This is my last video with Wayfair.  I hope you have enjoyed them!

Stop back next week where I will share more details on our newly decorated screened porch.
