Valentine s Day Wax Seal

Sharing another favorite since love is on my mind!

Today I am sharing how you can easily make your own custom Valentine’s Day wax seal.

Love Wax Seal copy

As my girls have gotten older, I tend to less decorating for Valentine’s Day, but we do usually try to pull together a few Valentine’s Day crafts.

Last year we even had an epic fail.

Wax Seal for Valentine s Day copy

So even though we are not decorating specifically for Valentine’s Day, we do have a few traditions that will never go away.

One of them is taking the time to let people you love know how you feel.

Valentine s Day Wax Seal Tutorial

So why not seal those envelopes with a beautiful custom wax seal?

Some time ago at an auction, I purchased a box lot that included these fabulous wax seals and melting wax.

Candle Wax Seal copy

Since they weren’t very relevant to us or to Valentine’s day, I decided to use simple rubber stamps to make my own custom wax seal.

I did have some specialty wax, like the green one below.  I also had some beautiful silver and gold wax – which instead of melting caught on fire.  Good times.

The pink wax pictured above is actually a sealing wax.

I also realized that most people don’t have specialty wax and custom seals laying around the house.  So I did this project using easily accessible household candlesticks and rubber stamps.

Valentine s Day Wax Seal Materials copy

Here are the steps below on how I did this project:

Valentine s Day Custom Wax Seal Tutorial copy

Step 1: Select your candle and envelopes. I tested several types of candles and envelope colors.  In the end, what I liked best was inexpensive white candles on darker envelopes.  If you use a colored candle, make sure the color goes all the way through.  Often the color is only on the outside and white on the inside.

Step 2: Light your candle and hold at an angle like pictured.  You want to make sure the wax runs behind the flame so that it doesn’t blacken.  Practice first on a piece of paper and obviously use caution.  Drip the wax in your desired shape creating the outside lines first and then filling in.

Step 3:  Let the wax set for a few seconds – till it just starts to loose its clearness.  Again, testing this first will be helpful as the wax on all candles is different.

Step 4: Place your stamp into the wax and let it set up for a few seconds before removing it.  Again, testing on paper will be helpful because the style of each stamp responds differently.  If a stamp has very small details it will not work as well.

Custom Wax Seal Tutorial copy

I think this is the perfect way to make a hand delivered Valentine even more special.

Update – Please note that I am suggesting this to be HAND delivered.  This project was never intended to be used to send in the US mail.  It is just a fun and cute craft but thank you for sharing all of your concerns.

Sharing an oldie, but a goodie….

When I met my husband, we were babies.

Okay, maybe not babies – but I met him at 18, started dating at 19 and married him at 23.

I have always said the best decision I have ever made was to marry him.

   Love-Canvas-Art

I remember the exact moment I realized.

I was on an Amtrak train in Connecticut going through the Naval shipyard.

And I instantly realized – “I want to spend the rest of my life with him.”

Vignette-Styling

And that was it – we both just knew.

So we finished college – okay, he kept going to college forever – but I finished and we planned and now here we are.

And 18 years later, we have two children and a happy life together.

Valentine-s-Vignette

We are partners.  And he is my best friend – and that is the best part.

Embroidery-twine-canvas-art copy

Life is busy – we don’t make big Valentine’s Day plans, or even exchange gifts.

But that doesn’t mean I like the day to go by without being sentimental and taking the time to appreciate our…Love.

Embroidered-twine-canvas-art

So this is how you make your own twine embroidered canvas…

Materials:

– Twine

-Canvas – I kept mine white, but you could paint it however you choose.

– A ruler

-Tape

– A print out of the words or pictures, or whatever you choose to embroider.

– Paper punch

– Smaller hammer

– Metal stamping plate

-Small scissors

– Tapestry needle

Twine Embroidery Canvas Supplies

Step 1: Place the stamping plate under the canvas – specifically where you are stamping.  Keep moving it along with the pattern you are stamping.

Be sure that the plate is tight to the underside of the canvas.  If there is space in between the plate and the canvas, there is a strong likelihood it will tear.  Some canvases are thicker and would require the plate to be lifted higher.

twine-canvas-embroidery

Step 2: Place your print out on the canvas and tape it into place.  Using your paper punch and small hammer, begin punching holes in the pattern.  Keep the spacing even and not overlapped.

        Steps-canvas-embroidery-twinetwine-embroidery-love-canvas-steps

This is what it will look like when you complete the pattern.  I tapped each hole about 5 times.

steps-embroidery-twine-canvas

Step 3: Remove the paper printout and admire your results!  Not all of the holes will have gone through unless your really beat the tar out of it.  Push the “hanging chads” through and snip with a small pair of scissors from the backside.

twine-steps-embroidery-twine

Step 4: Loop your twine through the needle and knot the end.

embroidery-canvas-twine

Step 5: Starting from the backside, following the basic stitches through the whole image.  When you have a break, just move across from the backside or knot from the back and start in a new spot.  If you end up not having enough holes to end from the backside, add another hole.

Twine-Embroidery copy

There are a lot of options for this – and I am looking forward to trying it with a picture instead of words.

But until them, I am just going to enjoy a little love in my family room.

Sooooo, this is a little awkward.

I haven’t posted since Christmas, and now I show up for Valentine’s Day.  Umm.  Well.  Yeah.  Like I said, awkward.

But, I am joining a fun group of bloggers, all hosted by the lovely Lory at Designthusiasm, and we are all sharing Valentine’s Day entertaining ideas.  So that is good right?   Make sure to click the links at the bottom to see the other ideas.

The reality with Valentine’s day for us is that it always comes in the middle of sugaring season and we have two daughters with crazy busy high school schedules.  So the idea of a romantic dinner, alone as we stare into each other’s eyes has about a zero percent chance of happening.

So, I am going to try and beat it to the punch and plan a Valentine’s Day breakfast.  Nothing too fancy or complicated.  Of course there will be waffles and maple syrup  and they will be joined with berries and hot cocoa.

And if there is hot cocoa, then there will have to be marshmallows.

I went old school with some heart doilies down the center of the island and added this sweet garland from Terrain.  It is all Liberty flower patterns which I became obsessed with when we went to London a few years ago.

All in all – simple, easy and inexpensive.

And then I popped some tulips in tea containers from my favorite tea.  Take the lesson I learned to heart – these tins are not water tight and you need to add a vase or mason jar in them.  I used a wide mouth mason jar in each.

And now it is time to check out what other ideas our blogger friends are sharing… Thanks so much!

It is Saturday and I am excited about it!  A day to get a whole bunch done around our house and then spend the night relaxing and tomorrow as a family day.

This holiday season has already been filled with so many holiday blessings.  We have been so overwhelmed with all of the support we have received from our retailers and customers in our online shop.  2016 has been so much more than we could have hoped for and we are so thankful.  THANK YOU!

The best part has been the notes from readers, the kindness from people in our community and the amazing team we have been blessed with to help us run Finding Home Farms.  I need to write a whole post about Karen soon and how amazing she is, but today is about her son Adam.

Karen had a vision for a video featuring our holiday products and it turns out her son is quite an amazing programmer / designer / animator.  Karen set her vision and Adam (who is 16 by the way) created it.  So, I thought today we would share it with all of you.

Didn’t he do an amazing job?  Thank you so much Adam!

Thank you also to the sweet Melissa of Woodwater Farmhouse – she shared such a beautiful focus on our company and our products.  You can read all about it here and visit her beautiful home and blog.

If you are looking for an incredible Christmas home tour – visit HERE and HERE

Fanciest cocktail idea ever.

Love THIS IDEA and it is way easier when I did it with galvanized metal.

And, if you would like to see our home all decked out for the holidays, visit here.

Finally, if you need gift tags, here are our printable ones for you to get it all done!

Have a great weekend friends!

I always wanted to put our real tree in the family room but there was never enough room to make it work without it being so close to the fireplace, which we use often.  So when we decided to add a second, artificial tree I was so excited to add it to this corner.  It is a thinner tree and I usually put in on a pedestal of some kind to make it taller and then it fits perfectly in this corner.

I knew I wanted to use our galvanized ornaments but I also knew I wanted to mix them with other textures.

snowball-and-galvanized-tree

I had a few wood ornaments that I added first and then starting add the silver and white traditional bulb ornaments.   Next, I began adding snowy and furry white ornaments to tie in with our mantel theme.

finding-home-farms-christmas-family-room

I then moved on to figuring out what to use as our “topper” and admittedly was stumped.  Then, I decided to use our oversized pinecone (I do not remember where I found it).  To actually make it work as a topper, I shoved in two long wooden skewers about half way into the pinecone and then I was able to place into the top of the tree.

made-in-america-usa-galvanized-christmas-ornament

Once I had done that I realized I wanted to add pinecones throughout the tree and I just rested them in between the branches.  It also served the purpose of filling in some of the bare spots that you sometimes get with an artificial tree.

finding-home-farms-christmas-tree

As much as I like the neutral and natural color scheme, I did not want to keep it so neutral so I added a thin red plaid ribbon wrapped several times around as a garland.  It was just the touch it needed to give it a little bit of color.

Thanks so much for stopping by and wishing you a great day.

I am a big fan of decorating that I love and that can be done in 10 minutes or less.  I love it so much that I started a whole series on it, called 10 Minute Decorating Ideas.  I know, a very revolutionary name.

Last year I shared how I used three of our vintage galvanized maple buckets and used a chalk pen to write JOY on them.  Since there was such a great response to that, I thought I would share the new version that I did this year.

Galvanized-Christmas-Buckets

Instead of using three buckets, I used one this time.  I simply wrote free hand and then added some simple snowflakes, all written with a chalk marker.

It literally took just a few minutes and then I dropped in a small artificial tree and placed in front of the tree in our family room.  And how sweet is the little cardboard house found at Michael’s early this season?

Even before I blogged, I loved decorating our mantel.  Of course, back that it was much smaller and looked very different, but I still remember really feeling like I was creating a home when I decorated our mantel.  When I began blogging, it seemed to be an area of decorating that I was really drawn to and I have loved changing it seasonally the past six years.  Not to make the other seasons feel bad, but my favorite is always our Christmas mantel.

galvanized-village-christmas-mantel-made-in-america-usa

We have been in development of our galvanized village for what seems like years and to finally share it here with you on our mantel makes me giddy.  Each piece is new, but made to look vintage and each piece is a little bit unique.  We are most proud that they are completely sourced and made in the USA.

made-in-the-usa-america-galvanized-village

I have grown to just love our chalkboard on our mantel to I decided to make a snowy scene and add “Let it Snow” on it.  We made the chalkboard and you can find the details here.   The font is Zapfino and printed it large, and angled each word to get a bit of an arch to the words.

At first, I thought I was going to be all fancy and do it free hand.  After a long time working on it, I decided I hated it and I ended up printing it, rubbing chalk on the back and then tracing it and filling it with a chalk pen.  Much better.

simple-galvanized-chalkboard-christmas-mantel

Then I hung our classic snowflake ornaments on long ribbons and taped them to the back to the chalkboard.

let-it-snow-galvanized-village-christmas-mantel

The only step left to do after that was fill in with greenery.  I started with a base of a variety of pieces of fake greenery and then added in fresh eucalyptus and cedar.  If they start to dry out, I have a small stash of fresh that I am keeping outside to freshen it up with.

chalkboard-christmas-mantel

I always start my decorating on our mantel and it sets the direction and tone for the rest of my room.  I carried the snow theme onto the tree and then started bringing in more white elements into the rest of the room.  I tried to find a balance of really feeling like it was decorated for Christmas and not overwhelming the room.

Thank you so much for giving me a place to share the decorating in our home.  In the big picture decorating is really not “important”, but in the day to day it really matters to me to create a home where we celebrate and feel comfortable.  And if some of the ideas we share spark an idea for you, than I am even happier.

Wishing you a beautiful day and thanks so much for reading.

Christmas time.  We are all in and ready.

Mostly.

There are still some bins here and there to head up to the attic and we still have to cut down our “real tree”, but it feels good to have the halls decked and the mistletoe hanging.  And the bins mean are not important.

This first picture above is my favorite few at Christmas.  And of course our tree.

snowball-pinecone-galvanized-christmas-tree

But wait, back up, let’s head to the front door where we have our nativity set and waiting.  It seems like such a perfect spot for it with our new dresser out here.

navitivity-scene

I have simplified things over the years but still try to bring touches throughout our home.  I went for more greenery, of course some galvanized details and lots of natural elements.  And little pops of red here and there.

finding-home-farms-christmas-family-room-2016

Handmade details like our yardstick tree, family pictures, and of course our soy candles keep it simple but make things a little special for the season.

christmas-decorating-details

This little galvanized tray I found just last week at a barn sale (yeah!) and turned it upside down as a little pedestal.

christmas-family-room-table

I am quite smitten with our mantel, but I will share more on that tomorrow.  Our tree is filled galvanized and snowballs ornaments with a simple red gingham ribbon as a garland.

chalkboard-mantel-christmas-family-room

I had a little bit of fun with our reindeer on our coffee table.  I found these a few years ago at Target (I think) and I made evergreen crowns for them, while watching a Hallmark movie of course.

reindeer-with-christmas-flower-crowns-for-christmas

The evergreens used here and throughout are a base of fake with real ones mixed in.   If any of them dry out too much, I can just pull them and I have a small stash I am keeping outside to refresh with.

reindeer-with-christmas-flower-crown

A galvanized tray here and there, a few vintage books, some white trees I picked up and of course, a few more soy candles and that was pretty much the theme throughout our family room.

joyeux-noel-soy-candle-christmas

As I moved towards the kitchen, I brought in more hints of blue and some winter berries that we have on our new property.

christmas-vignette-decorating-ideas

A vintage tray filled pinecones, greenery and some vintage ornaments rests on our console table.  I do not remember where I got the huge pinecone but I love it.  I have a second one that I used as the “topper” on our tree.

evergreen-galvanized-christmas-display

A large vintage blue jar was also filled with winter berries.  I drove past these berries for so many years and it so fun that now I can just go and pick them.  Okay, Dana went and picked them for me while I waited in the warm truck.

christmas-winter-berries

Our kitchen is simple and easy.  A few of our holiday tea towels and touches of red are all the kitchen needs.

christmas-kitchen-finding-home-farms

I hoping most of the decorating in here will be cookies and a few gingerbread houses.

winter-berries-blue-vintage-jar-christmas-kitchen

We have a little bit of a candy-cane-addict in our house, so I decided not to fight it and put them out on the island along with marshmallows for hot cocoa.  I added a small stash of our maple candies that some of us may or may not like to pop into our coffee.

candy-cane-hot-cocoa-station

Our table is simple and easy, but you can see all of the details on our table here.

When your chalkboard paper in your frame gets all torn up, you decide to use a sharpie on kraft paper instead and have a little mistletoe fun.

I am so excited to be sharing some of our home decorated for Christmas and to start with our kitchen table all set for a holiday meal. If you are joining me from Ann On Sutton Place, thank you so much for coming along.

I have learned a thing or two about decorating a table for “the blog” versus creating a table that my friends and family really can sit at and enjoy a meal that is also pretty and fun.  The key element – keep it simple.

simple-blue-red-christmas-tablescape

I almost always uses dishes, flatware and glasses that go in the refrigerator.  My one splurge is cloth napkins that we throw in the washing machine.  Recently, I have really been liking usable recyclable table runners as my base.  It keeps a neutral place to start with, in this case brown kraft paper, and it is a really simple clean up which is always important to me.

candy-cane-place-setting

I knew I wanted to use this beautiful blue velvet ribbon I found and that I wanted to keep it casual and fun with a candy cane.  I love fresh evergreens on the table as well so I have tucked some in the ribbon around the napkin, along with the candy cane.

simple-christmas-table-centerpiece

Then I hit my stash of vintage blue bottles and placed them down the center of the table.  I added some simple evergreen clippings, added some vintage ornaments and tied some red baker’s twine around the neck of the bottles and jars.

But the best part, is it is not just me.  I have teamed up with a whole group of lovely ladies, hosted by Design Enthusiasm, today so you can tour all of our ideas for creating a holiday entertaining space.  Next on your stop is Life On Virginia Street.
